It’s the start of a brand new year, and that means that the skies are the limit for you and your health goals! Here are 8 ways that you can start your year off right and make progress towards the happier, healthier version of you.
One of the hardest parts of eating healthy is simply all of the prep involved: you have to figure out what healthy meals should be on your menu for the week, shop for all the ingredients, then actually get down to cooking. For many busy people, all this work involved means that healthy eating often falls to the backburner.
So make your life easier and start using a meal prep delivery service! They’ll deliver healthy meals straight to your door so that you don’t have to worry about all of the prep involved. (If you’re looking for a local meal prep delivery service in Los Angeles, check out My Healthy Penguin for fresh, easy meal options!)
Physical fitness is a big part of staying healthy, and joining a gym is one of the best ways to get access to equipment and stay accountable. It’s also a great way to meet personal trainers or join fitness classes if you’d prefer to work with a professional or are nervous about starting out.
So do some research for gyms near you to find the right fit. Or, if you’ve let your membership expire in the past couple of years, now is a great time to rejoin and get ack on track.
If healthy weight loss has been on your list of to-dos for a while now, the start of a new year is the perfect time to begin working towards it. You don’t have to do anything hugely life-altering if you aren’t ready for that, but adding little milestone goals can help start your journey and push for momentum. Make little, achievable goals first (say, lose five pounds by the end of February) so that you can get started without overreaching.
Going outside is good for the mind and the body. Do some research on the best local parks and outdoor spaces near you and make an effort to take a walk at least once a week so that you can get some fresh air and reconvene with nature.
If you’ve been commiserating with your friends and families about feeling unhealthy and sluggish, now is a great time to get them all on board to work for better health. Keep each other accountable, join a fitness class together, or switch your get-togethers from dinners and drinks to something active, like hiking or biking.
If you found that you were spending a lot of time inactive and inert last year, it’s time to reevalute your daily routine. Establish a new productive morning routine, figure out what parts of the day that you can commit to healthy habits, and switch things around so that you’re working when you’re most productive. A little change is a good thing when it comes to fighting stagnation, inactivity, and boredom!
Keeping busy and engaged is a great way to boost your mental health, and it can also be good for your physical health as well. Start exploring some things that you’ve been wanting to get into – whether it’s crafting, journaling, reading more books, or learning a new skill like playing an instrument, it’ll keep you entertained and happy, which means less time spent on other, more unhealthy activities.
If you want to eat healthier but aren’t sure where you should start, cutting out the processed and packaged foods is a great first step. Do a little pantry inventory and figure out which processed foods you tend to buy, then figure out ways to cut them out of your diet and replace them with whole foods. For example, if you’re a salty chip fanatic, try making your own with fresh potatoes and an air fryer. You don’t have to aim for a total diet overhaul here; you just want to gradually find healthier ways to enjoy your favorites!
There’s no better time like the present to start working on those little habits that make a big difference later.
